Work Progressing

The welding on the spinning wheel has been finished and the wheel was placed on the float.  The burlap over the quilt was installed and work was started on the screening of the rocking chair.  Other wards are working on their assignments off site and hopefully we will get some updates and pictures from them.

A place has been found to work on the float and the float will be moved this week to our new work location in West Jordan.  I am told that it has electricity and bathrooms and is very nice.

Framing Almost Complete 

Our fearless leader, Bro. Bowen, has been busy every night this week welding the framework of our float together.  It is almost done and watching the float take shape for the first time is very exciting!  Here are some pictures of the float base.  Note that the head on the float is an extra one we had and it is being used right now just to give us perspective.

Field Trip to Innovative Design Concepts (IDC)

On Thursday we took a field trip to the IDC warehouse and got some personal instructions in float building.

There were several floats there already under construction.

This huge dog was carved out of foam and then plastered.

They answered all our questions.

He taught us how to apply the burlap around the foundation of the float.

We also learned how to glue the screening. I was assured that this glue would NOT give me cancer :)

Our Progressing Idea

As we've thought through the ideas, looked at the realities of building and the shape and size of our float base, and in talking to professional float builders, our idea has gone through several stages. (sorry about the low quality of these pictures)

This is a computer rendering of the general design of our float.

It's time to build our Float!

We have the float base and we are ready to get started on the float.  There will be a meeting this Saturday at 8am. Assignments will be given for the different components of the float and also go over a schedule for the timeline of the actual build. Please look at the pictures and come with ideas and suggestions on the actual construction. Now that the weather is starting to calm down a little,  we'll be able to start putting all the elements together to create a good looking float that will express the pride we feel in our heritage.

 

Here are some updates from our fearless leader:

"We met with a number of people over the last week or so.  Our float design concept has been approved by the main float committee in Salt Lake.  They loved our idea and can't wait to see it rolling down the highway in all of its glory.  They even said it looked like a "Pasadena" quality float!We also met with one of the professional float builders.  He too was very excited about our design.  He gave some great feedback and direction on how to improve on an already good idea."

They are now working with the artist to fine-tune the idea.

We've decided on a float company to work with and all the members of the float committee are invited to a training meeting Thursday the 23rd.  Meet at the Foothills building at 6pm to carpool.
